In 1847 the small Klein Karoo town called "veldskoen" was renamed Oudtshoorn.  Oakdene was built on the main road by Mr JH Muller who later built Oudtshoorn's magnificant sandstone "Moederkerk" and the pastorie.  In Oakdene Muller's style blended cape venacular with elements of traditional Victorian and Klein Karoo architecture.

Renovated to its former glory by owner Liza Retief, Oakdene is widely respected as one of the finest Guest Houses in the Klein Karoo.
